The Background

Intensify is a full-service digital marketing firm based out of Los Angeles, California. They offer and specialize in a breadth of services including digital advertising, social media growth and management, web design, and optimization. Originally founded by CEO Alexander Golick, the company has quickly expanded into an efficient 10 person team. They are currently listed as a top marketing agency by clutch.co and won the “Best of Thervo 2018” award.

We believe their success stems from their highly personalized care and fervent focus on expedited results. They even state on their website:

“Our goal is to provide your business with tangible growth within 3 months. We seek to demystify advertising by telling you exactly what we are going to do and reporting exclusively on real results.”

With many companies, it can take well over 6 months to see any results in SEO or even social media.

We had the chance to speak with Alex at length and he was kind enough to give some useful insights on what it really takes to successfully run social media for a small to medium-sized business.

The Advice

Question: What is the most common goal clients approach Intensify with?

We often hear from agencies that clients tend to be very myopic in view and approach social media as simply a direct sales channel. However, those of us who work in the social sphere know how hard directly attributing sales to social platforms can be. Alex made a great point in saying that for those companies who come to them with simply sales in mind, they often offer other services such as PPC campaigns and SEO. He went on to say,

“Social media is great for companies looking to attract attention from a bunch of new potential customers. In order to do that though, they need to increase their followers and engagement. Social media has to be looked at as brand building and as a tool for long-term growth.”


Question: What can a small to medium-sized business expect to spend on ads per month to run an effective campaign?

Here, Alex explained that if a company simply wants to get surface level engagement and page likes, they can spend a minimal amount of money. He warned though that most likely this would have no real lasting impact. He went on to say that in order to get real substantial results, companies need to be prepared to spend hundreds of dollar per month, and thousands if they want to use an agency.


Question: How many hours per week can a company expect to spend managing social media, and what are the most time-consuming aspects?

Alex answered this by saying:

“To give a rough estimate, if you are looking to actually grow and not just looking to post so that people think you have an active social media profile, around 15 hours.”

This estimate is just about right. While this may seem like a daunting number, it’s important to remember that many companies hire full-time employees just to fulfill this function. As for the most time-consuming aspects, Alex said:

“Engagement is the most time-consuming aspect. If you really want to increase your audience and grow your following, you need to be liking, following, and commenting constantly. This is why many companies end up choosing to outsource”


Question: Do you have an anecdotal story or case study you would share with us?

Alex shared a very interesting story with us which provides a perfect use case for social media.

They were hired by online retailer Veronica M with the expectations of growing their audience and brand building. At the time they were hired, Veronica M had a decently sized online audience, but very little engagement.

As Alex said, “They needed more cohesive branding”.  Alex said they conquered this task by sourcing, interviewing, and partnering with social media influencers, which was all done in-house by the Intensify team. He went on to inform us that in a very short course of time, Veronica M went from low engagement to “a ton” of it, and even started seeing substantial directly attributable online sales. They also held giveaways which garnered over a 1,000 entrants! This is a perfect example of the impact which is possible via efficiently managed social media.


Question: Do you have any tips you would be willing to share with those small to medium sized businesses who are looking to establish or build their online social presence?

Alex gave us the following statement which is filled with useful insights from a seasoned vet in the social sphere:

“Spend a lot of time engaging with other people. Reward the people who mention you. At least take the time to thank them. You are building a loyal following and you want people who are and will be champions of your brand. If you are able to get a small number of people who are very enthusiastic about your brand, you will be able to grow a community”.
